Reading with Older Children
Thursday, February 22nd, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedWhen my children were only babies, I read aloud to them every day. Even though they were still too young to even understand my words, it began to teach them to enjoy reading.
Now that they are older, and are able to read on their own, I still try to read aloud to them on a regular basis. I believe that the experience of reading together not only bonds us as a family, but also is a regular reminder that reading is fun, and that there is a word of books out there waiting to be discovered.
Another way we’ve tried to instill a love for literature in the boys is by listening to audiobooks during long drives. It can make the drive seem alot shorter, and it keeps the backseat fighting at bay.
We have also instituted a reward system in our home that, in part, rewards them for independent reading. There are some restrictions—no comic books or Lego magazines, only novels—and there are extra rewards for difficult reads, like The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It helps to provide an extra incentive to read.
Reading is an integral part of success in life, and as parents, we should do everything possible to ensure that our children have this vital skill.
