Mother’s Day is more popularly known as Mothering Sunday, the origins of the holiday date back to centuries when it was considered important for churchgoers to visit their home or “mother” church once a year. During Lent, the practice became quite popular, and in a society where children were often sent off to work in other villages at a very young age, it quickly became a time for family reunions and celebrations that were fondly cherished. A special cake might also be brought along to provide a festive touch.

Later, Mothering Sunday became a day when children and domestic servants were allowed a day off to see their families. Celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, Mothering Sunday remains a time to pay mothers their due rewards for all their love and encouragement with flowers, candies, cards, and other tokens of appreciation.

Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates in different countries. Most countries celebrate the special occasion of Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in the month of May. This tradition of honoring mothers and paying them tribute on the second Sunday in the month of May spread to many countries across the globe. Various countries adopted this date to celebrate Mothers Day.

Most of the countries celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May, but some countries celebrate it at different times throughout the year. Hindus in India have long celebrated festival in early October called Durga Puja worshiping their divine mother, Durga. Families spend weeks preparing food and gifts for friends and relatives, and also cleaning and decorating their houses for Durga Puja celebrations.

Whichever the religion or culture people may belong, whatever their style of life they may adopt or whichever the country in the world they may live, one thing is certain that Mother’s Day is a special day for everyone all over the world and no one can ever forget the power of mother’s love and her compassionate touch!
